Origins of the Jam
What started as a spontaneous weekend hang among friends has rapidly blossomed into a cultural staple at Ann Siang Hill Park. Founded in March 2025 by co-founders Ollie, Lara, and Jeremiah, the community was born out of a simple, organic desire to create a welcoming environment where amateurs and professionals alike could jam together in the open air.
Rather than relying on heavy promotion, the gatherings scaled up entirely through word-of-mouth attraction, growing from an intimate circle of thirty players to massive turnouts of nearly three hundred enthusiasts and curious spectators with camping chairs.Music Without Walls
Unlike traditional sessions locked behind age limits in bars or restricted to inner circles of seasoned pros, this community champions total accessibility. It is entirely free and open to everyone. The real magic lies in a mix of spontaneity and a genuinely supportive vibe.
"There's so many stages to being a part of Ann Siang Sounds.... you can show up and support from the audience. You can cheer and sing along from the crowd, you can ask to join a cover jam, or an improv jam… or just sit on the djembe and silently, very quietly, hit it to feel like you're a part of it."
Faces Behind The Beat
For many aspiring players, practising alone at home with a backing track can feel a bit isolating. These outdoor sessions provide a vital bridge from solitary bedroom practice to true communal collaboration.
Stepping into a circle of strangers can feel daunting, but the facilitators—all full-time musicians themselves—are always there to welcome newcomers with open arms, mentoring younger players just as they were once guided by senior artists.
Reassuring those who might feel a bit nervous, they remind participants that "everybody here was a stranger at some point too." By offering gentle guidance on instruments and song choices, they ensure that even the most hesitant beginners feel safe enough to put themselves out there.
Keeping the Local Pulse Alive
While these open jams do an incredible job of sparking passion, exposing hidden talent, and uniting locals and tourists alike, the co-founders emphasise that building a community is only half the battle.
A truly thriving arts scene requires real structural support. Pointing to the harsh realities facing young artists, they stress, "We have so much talent... a lot of it is not supported financially, and so when things can't be supported financially, unfortunately it means it doesn't have a space to thrive."
While grassroots spaces can teach young artists how to jam, they ultimately need paid gigs, proper venues, and financial backing so they do not have to look elsewhere. Sharing their ultimate vision, the team expresses, "I really hope that the music industry in Singapore stays alive. Like we find a way to support our musicians and give them spaces to grow."
Until then, initiatives like Ann Siang Sounds continue to keep the local heartbeat thrumming on the streets, proving that when you give people a space to connect, the magic happens all on its own.
